A Historical Perspective

In 1934, a small group of believers came together on Buchanan Street in Memphis. In 1937, they moved to Jackson Avenue, and Calvary Church was officially organized as a congregation. This growing group moved to a new location on Stage Road in 1973. After outgrowing those facilities in 2001, Calvary Church moved to its current home on Houston Levee Road in Cordova - a community thriving with opportunity and growth. We have big dreams for this 27-acre site, and we hope many in our community will come to know Calvary Church as a place to find Hope for Life and Help for Living.

Our first Sunday at our current location was Easter Sunday, 2001 – and since that time much has transpired in the life of our fellowship.  We are a body of believers intentionally focused on becoming a Community Church.  We envision this campus as a hub of community activity with ministries that are offered for every age group of the family.  You will find friends here, as well as a church that celebrates God’s diversity and is committed to modeling Reconciliation.  Calvary Church is now engaged in the production of a major motion picture (The Grace Card) that tells the story of how the power of God can help us overcome racial prejudice.  It is a “Memphis” story; and it is a reality that you will find modeled every week in this fellowship of believers.  You will find a warm welcoming atmosphere upon entering our doors and our hope is you will leave knowing you are loved by God and by our people!
